- UK freelance designers typically charge £200 to £350 a day at junior level, £350 to £550 mid-level and £550 to £1,000 or more when senior.

Short answer: in 2026 a UK business might pay anything from £200 a day for a junior freelancer to £1,000 or more for a senior one, £25,000 to £50,000 a year for an employed designer, or a few hundred to a few thousand pounds a month for a design subscription. Agencies price by project and usually sit at the top of the range.
The longer answer is that the price you're quoted is rarely what it ends up costing. Here's the whole picture, model by model.
Employing a designer
PayScale puts the average UK graphic designer salary at about £25,400, and senior designers at about £34,600. In London, recruiter Morgan McKinley puts it at £32,000 to £50,000. Then add the employer costs:
- Employer National Insurance: 15% on earnings above £5,000. On a £35,000 salary, about £4,500.
- Workplace pension: at least 3% of qualifying earnings. On £35,000, about £860.
- Recruitment: often 15 to 20% of first-year salary if you use an agency.
- Kit and software: a capable laptop and design licences, every year.
So a designer on £35,000 costs over £40,000 a year before recruitment, equipment or the time someone spends managing them.
Hiring a freelancer
UK freelance graphic designers typically charge £200 to £350 a day at junior level, £350 to £550 when mid-level and £550 to £1,000 or more when senior, with London at the top of each band. YunoJuno lists an average of about £353 a day. You only pay for the days you use, which is the big advantage. The cost to watch is your own time finding, briefing and managing them.
Working with an agency
Agencies quote by project or retainer. You're paying for strategy, senior thinking and project management as well as the design, so a brand identity can run well into five figures. For large, defined work that can be good value. For a weekly flow of small requests it's expensive, because each one carries the same overhead.
Using a design subscription
A subscription charges a fixed monthly fee for an ongoing team. At Workspace, Starter is £499 a month for one request at a time and up to 10 a month. Standard is £999 for two at a time and up to 20, and adds websites and landing pages. Pro is £1,499 for three at a time and up to 60. Pay annually and you get one month free. There are no setup fees, and you own everything you approve, source files included.
If you only need one thing, we also sell 55 one-off services at a fixed price, each with two revision cycles.
What a typical month costs in each model
Say you need eight pieces a month: social graphics, a few ads, an email design, a one-pager and a slide deck refresh.
- Employed designer: around £3,400 a month all in, and you're paying when they're quiet too.
- Freelancer: perhaps five to eight days, so roughly £1,750 to £4,400 at mid-level rates, plus your management time.
- Agency: usually the highest, because each piece is scoped and project-managed.
- Subscription: a fixed £499 to £999 a month, depending on how many pieces you need running at once.
These are rough figures to sense-check a budget, not quotes. Your mix of work will change them.
The cost nobody quotes you
In every model, someone on your side writes the brief, answers questions, chases progress and checks the files. If that's your head of marketing, a cheap day rate can turn into very expensive design. When you compare options, count your own hours too.
